2. Heirs with Disabilities

Disabilities that prevent an heir from achieving an independent lifestyle as an adult are an example of where most siblings have no problem with a disproportionate distribution of the estate. Parents may leave the disabled sibling a larger share of the estate; after all, if they do not, the healthy child may end up feeling the need to support the disabled sibling anyway.

Children with disabilities deserve to live a lifestyle comparable to the rest of the family. There are options for making the lives of your disabled family member more secure and comfortable. Be sure to contact your local government agencies, a qualified CFP, and/or seek tax advice. When it comes to providing your disabled child with a secure future, the best tool is life insurance on the lives of you, the parents. Read the chapter on the Tool Shed and Life Insurance (Chapters 8 and 9) for more information on how to provide for a disabled child.
